This training course has been developed for solicitors applying for judicial appointments. The JAC will launch a new round of vacancies for Recorders, District Judges (Civil), Salaried Judges of the Upper Tier and Circuit Judges throughout March, April and May. Participants will be helped to complete the self assessment application form, demonstrating that they fulfil the requirements of the selection criteria, and to undertake a mock panel interview.

Australia lifted it’s restrictions in lawyer ownership of law firms some years ago. Some of the firms
which successfully took advantage of this liberalisation, are now planning to scale their operations
and services in to the UK. What can we expect?

The Law Society is running a series of free Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO) regional networking groups, in association with 192business and Accuity.

Our February evening session will be a panel discussion  with three experienced in-house competition lawyers who will provide their perspectives on the practice of competition law in-house within a corporate, including among others the opportunities and challenges and dealings with internal colleagues, external counsel and the regulators.

Outcome focused regulation will create many challenges for property lawyers. Conveyancers will find that the new mandatory outcomes and non-mandatory indicative behaviours are difficult to apply to conveyancing transactions which have been previously subject to reasonably clear and specific rules.

The Association of Women Solicitors and the Law Society are delivering this two-day course to assist solicitors who may wish to return to practice after a career break.  The programme includes an analysis of the current job market and sessions on:  the challenges of returning to the work place; application/selection workshop; cv clinics; employment law update; career options; career and self-assessment workshop; professional requirements for a returner; and a civil litigation update.

International Women’s Day, is marked on 8 March every year. This is a major day of global celebration of women. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and celebration to women's economic, political and social achievements. On 8 March, The Law Society will be hosting a summit to celebrate International Women's Day. A pre-summit networking dinner will take place on 7 March.

In 2010, the Environmental Audit Committee linked poor air quality to severe health problems such as respiratory illness, heart disease and asthma and to environmental degradation. In towns and cities, 70% air pollution is caused by transport. The end of 2011 is the extended deadline given to London by the European Commission to curb particulates (PM10) to levels set by the 2008 Air Quality directive and to avoid a substantial fine.
