Can human rights be universal and have respect for cultural relativism?

You are cordially invited to the Prize Giving event of the 2009 Graham Turnbull essay competition, followed by a reception. This will take place on 27 April, 6:00 for 6:30pm, at the Law Society, Chancery Lane, London. To register attendance click on the register now button at the top of the page.

We will have speakers on Islam and Human Rights and on Rwanda's Gaccaca courts.

The competition is run by the International Human Rights Committee of the Law Society and the Junior Lawyers Division. It is named after Graham Turnbull, a British solicitor who was killed in 1997 while working as a United Nations human rights monitor in Rwanda.

This year’s essay title is: Can human rights be universal and have respect for cultural relativism?

Our judge has selected the winner and runner-up, who will be announced at the Prize Giving. They will receive cheques of £500 and £250 respectively.
