The current rate of decline in biodiversity at global, national and regional levels means that the 2010 conservation targets set by the Convention on Biological Diversity in 2001 have not been reached. The Government addressed the issue in its recent White Paper ‘The Natural Choice: securing the value of nature’ following Sir John Lawton’s review of England’s wildlife and ecological networks.

Issues: Sir Graham Wynne, former Chief Executive, RSPB (not confirmed)
Law and regulation: Niall Watson, WWF-UK

Forthcoming debates
06 March 2012, Chemicals in the Environment, The Law Society
Background
The dispersal of many man-made chemical substances into the environment has led to concerns about the links with health problems and ecological damage. Release of chemicals has been caused both by accident and design: from, for example, manufacturing processes, spills, inadequate storage, use and after-use disposal.
Speakers
Issues: Professor Jane Plant, Imperial College, London
Law and regulation: William Upton, Barrister, 6 Pump Court
Policy: Dr Arwyn Davies, Head of Chemicals and Nanotechnologies, Defra

17th April, Air Pollution, The Law Society
Background
In 2010, the Environmental Audit Committee linked poor air quality to severe health problems such as respiratory illness, heart disease and asthma and to environmental degradation. In towns and cities, 70% air pollution is caused by transport. The end of 2011 is the extended deadline given to London by the European Commission to curb particulates (PM10) to levels set by the 2008 Air Quality directive and to avoid a substantial fine.
Speakers
Issues: Isabel Dedring, Deputy Mayor for Transport, London
Law and regulation: Professor Robert Lee, Cardiff University
Policy: Daniel Instone, Head of Air Quality, Defra
